Brazil is the ‘B’ in the BRICS emerging economies of the developing world, together
with Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Within the last decade, Brazil has grown
as a developing industrial country and regional power, extending its global influence
in areas such as trade, biofuels, biodiversity, and climate change.

After a period of political instability that ended with the impeachment and removal from
office of former President Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016), Jair Bolsonaro won the
presidency in October 2018 and assumed office on January 1, 2019.

Measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), South America's largest economy
ranked as the world’s eighth largest economy in 2017 (
CIA World Factbook, February 27,
2019
).

Based on data (27 February 2019) obtained from the Central Bank of Brazil, imports
and exports in 2018 totaled US$181.2 billion and US$239.6 billion, respectively.
Comparison with trade figures for 2017 reveals an increase in both imports and exports
of 20.2 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

During 2018, primary products represented 50 percent of total exports, followed by
manufactured products with 37 percent, and semi-manufactured products with 13
percent.
