GRATITUDE*
GRATIDÃO
MARIA CRISTINA GAMA DE FIGUEIREDO
Translation by Rosaliene Bacchus
MARIA CRISTINA
GAMA DE
FIGUEIREDO
Wake up & see:
our buildings,
the potted
plants.
Everywhere is
Nature.

HAIKU POEM
ROSALIENE BACCHUS

My whole being is a grateful response
to nature that surrounds me.
And because everything is nature,
even the manufactured object,
even the remote control on the table,
all of me is indifferently nature
because everything is a part of life
through touch or through sight
and because it simply is:
so is life, it’s nature.
It’s better to be grateful than ungrateful
even imbued with so much pain
to be less crazy the better to forget the wound.
BRAZILIAN POET
1964-2010
EVERYWHERE
IS NATURE
I can define [Maria Cristina] as a restless soul who
managed to transform her pain into art.
~ WILMA SANTOS, PRODUCER FOR MARIA CRISTINA FOR MORE THAN
12 YEARS. [TRANSLATION BY ROSALIENE BACCHUS.]

Maria Cristina Gama de Figueiredo writes a lot and
writes well. She writes in verse and prose with
elegant, rich vocabulary, and strong content, as
already seen in A Próxima Índia (1998), for example,
a mature book, with language executed with the rigor
of one who has updated speech… [She] has the
stature of great poets, and seeks to think of poetry
with reflection that goes beyond language, to be an
instrument that art brings to the cultural dialog of
peoples. [Her] verse and prose in O Violino Cerebrino
(2004) is a book of the new and good Brazilian
literature.
~ LUIZ ANTÔNIO BARRETO (1944-2012) - JOURNALIST, HISTORIAN
AND MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY OF LETTERS OF SERGIPE -
INFONET
OCTOBER 2010. [TRANSLATION BY ROSALIENE BACCHUS.]

Gratidão*
Maria Cristina Gama de Figueiredo

Todo meu ser é uma resposta
agradecida à natureza que me cerca.
E porque tudo é natureza,
mesmo o objeto fabricado,
mesmo o controle remoto sobre a mesa,
tudo me é indiferentemente natureza
