I am a creator of phrases. What is a verse? It is a phrase, a
rhythmic unit, with the characteristic of being illogial. Illogicality is
very important for the verse.

I learned that the artist does not just see. He has
visions. With the vision comes madness, random things,
fantasies, mischievousness… The poet humanizes
things, time, the wind. Things, as they are in the world,
become boring over time. We have to arrange things in
new manners.

Things thrown out as junk are treasures to me;
my favorites are cans.
Cans make poor words for people but they are concrete.
If you throw away a can, considering it junk: a beggar,
cook, or poet can pick it up and use it.
For that reason, I think cans are more satisfying, for
example, than ideas.
Because ideas, being objects conceived in the mind,
are abstract.
And if you throw away an abstract object as junk,
no one wants to pick it up.
For that reason, I think cans are more satisfying.
We take a can, fill it with sand and leave, and
push through the streets a custom-made sand-truck.
An idea, being an abstract object conceived by the mind,
cannot be filled with sand.
For this reason, I think the can is more satisfying.
Ideas are the lights of the mind - we know that.
There are brilliant ideas - we know that too.
But ideas also invented the atomic bomb, the atomic
bomb, the bomb.
Now I would like that words would illuminate
that what we call junk would illuminate.

As coisas jogadas fora por motivo de traste
são alvo da minha estima.
Prediletamente latas.
Latas são pessoas léxicas pobres porém concretas.
Se você jogar na terra uma lata por motivo de
traste: mendigos, cozinheiras ou poetas podem pegar.
Por isso eu acho as latas mais suficientes, por
exemplo, do que as idéias.
Porque as idéias, sendo objetos concebidos pelo
espírito, elas são abstratas.
E, se você jogar um objeto abstrato na terra por
motivo de traste, ninguém quer pegar.
Por isso eu acho as latas mais suficientes.
A gente pega uma lata, enche de areia e sai
puxando pelas ruas moda um caminhão de areia.
E as idéias, por ser um objeto abstrato concebido
pelo espírito, não dá para encher de areia.
Por isso eu acho a lata mais suficiente.
Idéias são a luz do espírito — a gente sabe.
Há idéias luminosas — a gente sabe.
Mas elas inventaram a bomba atômica, a bomba
atômica, a bomba.
Agora eu queria que os verbos iluminassem.
Que os trastes iluminassem.

Manoel de Barros -
lawyer, farmer, and
poet - is one of
Brazil's most acclaim-
ed contemporary
poets.
Born in Cuiabá, Mato
Grosso, he moved to
Campo Grande, Mato
Grosso do Sul, at the
age of thirteen years.
In 1941, he obtained
his Law Degree in Rio
de Janeiro. Returning
to Campo Grande, he
spent the rest of his
life there as a farmer
and cattle rearer.
In 1937, two years
after writing his first
poem at the age of
nineteen years,
Manoel de Barros
self-published his first
poetry collection. Since
then, he has had more
than twenty books of
poetry published.
His numerous awards
include the following:
~ Orlando Dantas
Award (1960) granted
by The Brazilian
Academy of Letters
for his book
Compêndio para uso
dos pássaros;
~ The Federal District
Cultural Foundation
Award (1969) for
Gramática expositiva do
chão;
~ Jabuti Award
(1989), the highest
literary award in
Brazil, for O guardador
de águas;
~ Nestlé National
Poetry Award (1997)
for Livro sobre nada;
and
~ Cecília Meireles
Literary Award (1998)
granted by the
Ministry of Culture for
his body of work.
