FEATURED POETS

BRAZIL

CARIBBEAN
GUYANA

UNITED STATES

There exists a struggle for the empowerment of the
[indigenous] people. There exists a struggle against
invisibility that still plagues us. There exists a struggle
against decimation that has been going on for centuries.
There exists a struggle that tries to combat prejudice,
racial motives that lead to thinking that we’re animals,
that we don’t need land to live, that don’t understand our
culture, and then brutally take away our rights and kill our
warriors and ravage the forest and rivers. We fight for
purer air where everyone can breathe and live. For a
greener green and a river clean of pollutants and poison.
We fight for our culture and for the presence of our
shamans. We fight for the indigenous woman to occupy
more and more of her space within this new scenario
where she has a deciding voice. For a more humanistic
health, an education that realizes the peculiarities felt and
lived in the villages. We fight!

NARRATION IN PORTUGUESE

Silêncio Guerreiro
Márcia Wayna Kambeba

No território indígena,
O silêncio é sabedoria milenar,
Aprendemos com os mais velhos
A ouvir, mais que falar.

No silêncio da minha flecha,
Resisti, não fui vencido,
Fiz do silêncio a minha arma
Pra lutar contra o inimigo.

Silenciar é preciso,
Para ouvir com o coração,
A voz da natureza,
O choro do nosso chão,

O canto da mãe d’água
Que na dança com o vento,
Pede que a respeite,
Pois é fonte de sustento.

É preciso silenciar,
Para pensar na solução,
De frear o homem branco,
Defendendo nosso lar,
Fonte de vida e beleza,
Para nós, para a nação!

Poem from Ay Kakyri Tama - Eu Moro Na
Cidade
, poetry collection by Márcia Wayna
Kambeba, published by Pólen Livros, São
Paulo, Brazil, 2018.

Silent Warrior
Silêncio Guerreiro
by Márcia Wayna Kambeba
Translation by Rosaliene Bacchus

In indigenous territory,
Silence is ancient wisdom,
We learn from the elders
To listen, more than talking.

In the silence of my arrow,
I resisted, I was not defeated,
I made silence my weapon
To fight against the enemy.

To be silent is necessary,
To listen with the heart,
The voice of nature,
The sobbing of our earth,

The song of water mother
In the dance with the wind,
Ask that we respect her,
The source of our sustenance.

It is necessary to be silent,
To think about the solution,
To restrain the white man,
Defending our home,
Source of life and beauty,
For us, for the nation!
MÁRCIA WAYNA
KAMBEBA, artistic name
of Márcia Vieira da Silva,
is an indigenous poet
and geographer. Born in
1979 in the village of
Belém do Solimões in
Brazil's northern state of
Pará, she is of Omágua
Kambeba ethnicity. After
living among the Ticuna
people until the age of
eight, she moved with
her family to São Paulo
de Olivença—once the
largest settlement of the
Kambeba people—in
Amazonas.

Influenced by her
grandmother, a teacher
and poet, Márcia Wayna
began writing her first
poems at twelve years.
She left São Paulo de
Olivença to study at the
Amazonas State
University in the capital
of Manaus, where she
earned her bachelor’s
degree in geography.
Upon completion, she
took a course in
Environmental Education
at a private college.
Then, in 2010, she
spent the next two years
at the Amazonas Federal
University working for
her master’s degree. For
her dissertation, she
conducted a research on
the Kambeba people
located in the village just
25 miles distant from
Manaus.

Upon the successful
completion of her
master’s degree, Márcia
Wayna moved to Belém,
capital of Pará, where
she got married. She
transformed her
dissertation into a poetry
collection,
Ay Kakyri
Tama – Eu Moro Na
Cidade,
self-published in
2018.

As a poet, writer,
performer, and public
speaker, Márcia Wayna
Kambeba addresses
issues related to the
identity of indigenous
peoples, their territorial
rights, and the
treatment of woman in
the villages.
