The young Yes woman in full bloom
walked into the bar
she looked around her lustrous hair swaying
her eyes spitting out the seed of the night
she pouted her mouth seductively
readied for silent kisses.
Soon she disappeared into the night
at daybreak she returned alone
laughing out loud to the morning.
She tried spitting out her fate
into the drain of the sink
but the weight of the tear
was stronger
transfigured
she collected her heart
shriveling cheated
fled into sleep
to dream of living.

I think poetry is a way of looking at things… My
poetry, in my view, arises from an idea. It's a real job,
an intellectual job. A difficult job, because it’s
synthetic, because you have to give new meanings to
the word.
Lyricism, as I understand it, can happen in any text,
even in movies. It’s that moment that excites and
engages the reader. In this case, it would be a poem
that causes emotion… [I]t’s that which will express
one’s sentiments and emotions in relation to one’s self
and to the world.

Born in Teresina, Piauí,
Graça Vilhena is a
contemporary
lyrical-social poet,
story-teller, and
professor of Classical
Portuguese Literature.
After graduating in
Literature from the
Federal University of
Piauí, she specialized
in the Portuguese
Language at the
Pontifical Catholic
University in São Paulo.
Her poetry collections
include:
Passo a Pássaro (with
William Melo Soares);
Em Todo Canto (1997);
Antologia de Poetas
Piauienses e Cearenses;
Baião de Todos (1996);
O Jornaleiro de Gesso
(2002); and Pedra de
Cantaria (2013).

Graça Vilhena
A moça do sim entrou no bar
olhou em volta, o coração em flor
enfeitava-lhe os cabelos
cuspiu semente de noites pelos olhos
e preparou a boca ardentemente
para os beijos mudos.
Desapareceu na noite
gargalhou a madrugada
e voltou sozinha na manhã.
Tentou escarrar seu destino
no ralo da pia
mas o peso da lágrima
foi mais forte
transfigurada
recolheu o coração
murcho de engano
fugiu no sono
e sonhou que vivia.
