FEATURED POETS

BRAZIL

CARIBBEAN
GUYANA

UNITED STATES

The poetry of Carlos Machado forms part of the proposals
of the great line of universal poetry: the discourse of man
in the world and his existential condition.
~ RONALDO COSTA FERNANDES IN HIS ESSAY "TESOURA CEGA:
POEMS BY CARLOS MACHADO," DOBRA EDITORIAL, SÃO PAULO,
BRAZIL, 2015.

Pássaro de Vidro (Glass Bird) introduces us to a fully
mature poet, rigorous in his substantive conciseness, in
which clarity and lightness are at the service of a
reflective and consistent poetry. It is worth mentioning the
impeccable finishing of the poems that result in clear
artifacts, without erasure.
~ DONIZETE GALVÃO FROM HIS COMMENTS ON MACHADO’S
COLLECTION,
PÁSSARO DE VIDRO (GLASS BIRD), EDITORA HEDRA,
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, 2006.

Certo
Carlos Machado

as coisas não dão certo
nunca deram certo
não foram feitas para dar certo

nós é que temos a ambição
do alinhamento e da simetria

e até inventamos deuses perfeitos
construídos à imagem
e semelhança do que sonhamos

as coisas não dão certo
nós é que cerzimos o pano
obturamos o dente
remendamos a fronteira no mapa

e inauguramos
na estátua de chumbo
um simulacro de ave

queremos crer
que as coisas dão certo
as coisas agora estão dando certo
e — se deus quiser —
sempre darão

Poem from Pássaro de Vidro, poetry
collection by Carlos Machado, published by
Editora Hedra, São Paulo, Brazil, 2006.

things do not work out
never worked out
were never made to work out

it is we who have ambition
for alignment and symmetry

and even invent perfect gods
constructed in the image
and likeness of our dreams

things do not work out
it is we who patch the fabric
fill the tooth
repair the border on the map

and we inaugurate
in the lead statue
an effigy of a bird

we want to believe
that things work out
things are now working out
and – god willing –
always will
