PHILOSOPHY
FILOSOFIA
JOSÉ GUILHERME DE ARAÚJO JORGE
Translation by Rosaliene Bacchus
We retrace
the path
once rutted,
now asphalted.
Gone is
yesteryear.

HAIKU POEM
ROSALIENE BACCHUS

Do you really want to know
how life should be lived?
Well... first you have to live
and then, philosophize...

People say they’re rich... Maybe...
But then again maybe not...
To be rich... is just to be able
to do whatever your heart desires...

In this eternal and difficult struggle
I am reborn at every moment
washing the pains of life
in the river of forgetfulness...

Where can I dream of another age?
The faith I had, and lost?
Today... I yearn for...
that... which has already died...
BRAZILIAN POET
(1914-1987)
YESTERYEAR
[The poet] is a translator of subjective realities. A
transformer. A diver of the seas of the spirit. It’s
through message that the common man can reach
"the other side" of things! The poet’s work enriches
everyone. Since the poet is a magician – he makes
magic with Life – he turns water into wine for
beauty’s intoxication.

[Poetry] is the science of the heart. Poets are the wise
ones of sentiments… I have said many times: they
are beings who think, feel, or think, because they feel.
They build their world with emotions. When they want
to philosophize, they speak of love. And to speak of
love is already to make poetry.

Filosofia
José Guilherme de Araújo Jorge

Você quer mesmo saber
como a vida se levar?
Pois é... primeiro viver
e depois, filosofar...

Diz que é rico... Pode ser...
Mas pode ser que não seja...
Ser rico... é apenas poder
fazer o que se deseja...

Nessa eterna e dura lida
renasço a cada momento
lavando as dores da vida
no rio do esquecimento...

Onde o sonhar de outra idade?
A fé que tive, e perdi?
Hoje... chego a ter saudade
daquele... que já morri...

Poem from Cantiga do Só, published in
1964.
