HAIKU POEMS
selections from
IN THE WATERS OF TIME
NAS ÁGUAS DO TEMPO
FLORA EGÍDIO THOMÉ
Translation by Rosaliene Bacchus
The Haiku
Master
flows with the
mighty waters.
A beacon for
all.

HAIKU POEM
ROSALIENE BACCHUS

Born in times of water
in the waters of time I am...
drifting alone.

Nasci em tempos de água
nas águas do tempo estou...
vogando sozinha.

Mother and daughter
play house
longing for the future.

Mãe e filha
brincam de casinha
com saudades do futuro.

To decipher time
of the clock or of dreams.
Mystery of life.

Decifrar o tempo
do relógio ou dos sonhos.
Mistério da vida.

Winding paths
memories that go and come
on the floor of memory...

Caminhos retorcidos
lembranças que vão e vêm
no chão da memória...

The key imprisons
man. Without it,
he is in harmony with himself.

A chave aprisiona
o homem. Sem ela,
está em harmonia consigo.

The poet journeys
far from loved ones.
But full of love.

O poeta caminha
longe de amores.
Mas cheio de amor.

THE HAIKU
MASTER
In 2002, Flora Thomé published her book of haikus, In
the Waters of Time
. Haiku is a poetic art form of
Japanese origin consistent with the construction of
very short poems of three lines, marked by the depth
and ability to cause intense ruminations in the
attentive reader...

She reveres the Japanese poet Basho (1644-1694),
the vertex-man of haiku, a Zen historical figure.
Considered a form of Buddhism, Zen maintains itself
on inner contemplation… True haiku is an attempt, a
Zen compassion to bring to reflection the indescribable.
